EES and ETIAS in Europe 2026 — What Changes for Saudis and Residents on Arrival?

By Mohammed Al-Ahdal — founder of Smooth Travel · Last updated 2026-09-24

Summary

  • EES = biometric registration at the border (fingerprint + face photo) instead of a stamp. Applies to you.
  • ETIAS = an electronic authorization for visa-exempt nationalities (such as British and American citizens). Does not apply to you because you need a Schengen visa in the first place.

What exactly is EES?

Europe's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. The first time you enter the Schengen area after that:

  1. You scan your passport at a machine or with an officer
  2. Four fingerprints and a photo of your face are taken
  3. Your entry and exit dates are recorded electronically

Later times are faster — just a face check. The system automatically applies the 90-days-within-180-days rule, so any overstay is detected instantly.

Arrival tips

  • Allow extra time on your first entry (registration queues)
  • Carry printed copies with you: hotel booking, return ticket, insurance — you may be asked about them
  • Do not overstay your visa even by a day — an overstay is recorded and affects your future applications
  • If you are carrying €10,000 or more in cash, you must declare it on entry

ETIAS: when does it start and for whom?

ETIAS is an electronic authorization for visa-exempt nationalities, and it has not launched yet — there is no officially announced date as of September 2026 (reports point to 2027). Saudis and residents of Saudi Arabia need a regular Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not apply to them at all. (We monitor any changes and update this page monthly.)

FAQ

Does EES require prior online registration? No, it is done at the border point. Does it apply to children? Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting. Has the visa itself changed? No, applying for a Schengen visa is exactly the same as before.
